While you can legally drive through the mountain pass, local authorities strongly advise against it during peak hours. Heavy traffic from pedestrians, cyclists, and horse-drawn carriages makes navigating the narrow route stressful and dangerous.

Can you drive the Gap of Dunloe?

Yes, it is a public road, but driving is heavily discouraged during the day.

The route stretches for approximately 11 kilometres (7 miles) from north to south. It is a single-lane road with limited passing places and blind corners. Local authorities warn against taking motorized vehicles through the pass when tours and carriages are operating.

Why is driving Gap of Dunloe discouraged?

The road is very narrow and shared with heavy pedestrian and equine traffic.

You will encounter high volumes of walkers, cyclists, and traditional jaunting cars. These horse-drawn wagons have the right of way. Drivers must yield to the carriages and keep a safe distance from the horses to avoid spooking them.

How long does it take to drive?

Driving the pass takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

This time assumes light traffic. During the day, you will likely get stuck behind slow-moving walkers or jaunting cars. Because the road is narrow, you cannot easily pass them. Reversing to a passing spot is often required if you meet oncoming traffic.

What are the rules if you must drive?

Yield to jaunting cars and respect private farmland.

If you have to drive the route, go early in the morning or late in the evening. Keep your speed very low. You must give way to horses at all times. Do not trespass on private land or disturb roaming livestock along the pass.
